La signification du mihrab en Islam

A Mihrab est la niche de prière ou le point focal architectural qui indique la qibla, the direction Muslims face toward the Kaaba in Mecca during prayer. In mosque architecture, the mihrab is normally positioned at the center of the qibla wall and helps organize the prayer hall around the correct direction of worship.

The mihrab is not an altar and it is not worshipped. Its role is architectural, functional and symbolic: it identifies the qibla wall, creates a clear visual center for the prayer space and often becomes one of the most carefully designed elements of the mosque interior.

Que représente un mihrab ?

Throughout Islamic architectural history, mihrabs have been produced in stone, marble, tile, carved wood, plaster and other materials. Their appearance differs by region and period, but the essential function remains the same: clearly marking the direction of prayer.

Traditional mihrabs may use geometric ornament, arabesque patterns and carefully selected calligraphy. Contemporary mosque projects can use simpler forms, integrated lighting and modern materials while preserving the same religious and architectural purpose.

Mihrab, mur de qibla et conception de mosquée

The dimensions and proportions of a mihrab should be coordinated with the width and height of the qibla wall, prayer hall scale, ceiling height, minbar position and circulation around the imam area. For practical planning information, see our mosque mihrab dimensions guide.

Pour la conception sur mesure, les options de matériaux et les exemples de projets, consultez notre page principale Mihrab de mosquée et de masjid page.

Existe-t-il un style standard unique de mihrab ?

No. Ottoman, Seljuk, Maghrebi, Gulf, South Asian and contemporary mosque interiors can all use different mihrab proportions and decorative languages. The most suitable design is the one that respects the mosque architecture, qibla wall dimensions, local design character and project budget.

Questions fréquentes

Quelle est la fonction principale d'un mihrab ?
The mihrab indicates the qibla direction and visually organizes the front of the prayer hall.

Chaque mosquée a-t-elle besoin d'un mihrab décoré ?
No. A mosque needs a clearly understood qibla direction, but the architectural treatment can range from very simple to highly decorative.

Un mihrab peut-il être fabriqué sur mesure ?
Yes. Custom mihrabs can be designed around the actual qibla wall dimensions, material preference, calligraphy and architectural style of the mosque.

The Meaning of Mihrab in Islam A mihrab is the prayer niche or architectural
