Mosque HVAC & Ventilation Retrofit

Mosques have unusual occupancy profiles: a large hall may be lightly occupied between prayers and densely occupied during Friday prayer, Ramadan or major events. Retrofit design should respond to these peaks while controlling noise, drafts, humidity, energy use and visual impact.

1. Establish the existing condition

2. Heritage and visual integration

Coordinate ducts, grilles, diffusers, pipework and equipment with calligraphy, decorative painting, stone, timber and key sight lines. Avoid cutting significant fabric when lower-impact routes exist.

3. Acoustic coordination

Mechanical noise can reduce speech intelligibility. Fan noise, diffuser noise, vibration and reverberation should be considered alongside the mosque sound system rather than after installation.

4. Moisture behaviour

Changing indoor temperature and air movement can alter condensation risk at glazing, domes and external walls. Retrofit design should therefore be coordinated with the building envelope and known moisture problems.

5. Occupancy zoning and controls

Where appropriate, controls can respond to prayer times, zones and occupancy instead of conditioning the full building identically at all times. The strategy is project-specific.

6. Maintenance access
