Exterior Dome Envelope
Verkleidungssysteme für Moscheekuppeln
Mosque dome cladding is not only a decorative skin. The visible metal must be coordinated with geometry, substrate, waterproofing, thermal movement, ventilation, crown, finial, skirt and drainage.

Material comparison
| Material | Visual character | Key design issue | Typical reason to select |
|---|---|---|---|
| Messing | Warm gold / bronze-gold | Exact alloy, surface finish, weathering and compatibility strategy | Premium traditional or ceremonial appearance |
| Kupfer | Bright copper to brown / green patina | Patina expectation, seam detailing and adjacent metals | Long-life architectural metal and natural ageing |
| Edelstahl | Silver, satin, mirror or coloured/PVD | Grade, surface consistency and thermal movement | Durability and controlled contemporary finish |
| Aluminium | Coated metallic or RAL colours | Expansion, coating and panel stiffness | Low weight and colour flexibility |
| Titanium-zinc | Natural grey / pre-weathered | Ventilation, moisture control and substrate compatibility | Architectural folded-metal appearance |
Recommended build-up logic
A project-specific build-up can include the primary steel dome, secondary profiles, interior lining or backing, vapour control where required, thermal/acoustic insulation, continuous substrate or sheathing, waterproofing layer, ventilation cavity where required, separation layer and the final architectural metal skin. The correct sequence depends on climate, internal humidity, material and structural design.
Panel and seam options
Radial standing seam
Panels taper toward the crown and seams converge visually.
Segmented panels
Transverse joints break long panels into controlled fabrication and transport lengths.
Shingle / tile format
Useful for complex curvature or heritage character, with disciplined joint and water-path detailing.
Large formed panels
Cleaner visual field but greater forming, transport and oil-canning considerations.
Reference examples

Interfaces to resolve before fabrication
- Dome support ring and base flashing
- Radial carrier and circumferential ring geometry
- Crown cap and finial / alem penetration
- Lightning protection and isolation
- Hidden gutter, overflow and adjacent roof waterproofing
- Panel expansion and fixed/sliding points
- Maintenance access and future replacement
- Compatibility between cladding, fixings, membranes and adjacent metals
Technical reference basis
The detailing logic in this library follows MosqueBuild project-planning practice together with public architectural-metal references. The Copper Development Association documents radial standing-seam dome geometry, converging seams, crown caps, cleats and continuous substrate principles for copper domes. Final alloy, gauge, wind design, waterproofing, fire, lightning protection, substrate and local-code requirements must always be confirmed for the actual project.
