Mosque Doors & Woodwork for Africa: Specification Guide

Mosque doors are both architectural statements and high-use building components. Entrance doors must be designed around climate, opening size, security, hardware, glazing and maintenance—not only carving style.

Start with the opening schedule

For every door record structural opening width and height, finished wall thickness, swing direction, threshold condition and whether the frame is included. Large double-leaf entrances need special attention to leaf weight, hinge capacity, wind exposure and daily operating method.

Solid wood versus engineered construction

Solid timber offers depth, repairability and traditional craftsmanship, but very large leaves require careful moisture control and construction. Engineered cores, laminated components and veneered systems can improve stability or reduce cost when designed correctly. Material selection should follow door size, exposure and desired carving depth.

Humidity, sun and finish selection

External doors in coastal or humid locations need detailing that limits water traps and protects end grain. Strong solar exposure can heat dark finishes and accelerate surface ageing. Overhangs, drip details, suitable coatings and realistic maintenance intervals matter as much as the wood species itself.

Glass and hardware must be specified separately

Decorative laminated or tempered glass, digital printing, handles, locks, closers and panic hardware should have clear inclusion or exclusion notes in the quotation. Hardware selected locally may be preferable where replacement parts and code compliance are important. Any glass design should be coordinated with the approved artwork and safety requirement.

Coordinate other woodwork

Qibla-wall panels, column wraps, screens and doors should share veneer direction, stain colour and motif scale. This does not mean every element must be identical. A common material family with controlled variation usually creates a more professional interior than copying one motif onto every surface.

Packing and measurement checklist

Confirm final openings before production, especially after plaster, stone or cladding thickness is known. Export doors need rigid edge protection and dry packing. Send opening dimensions, wall thickness, photos, quantity, desired timber/finish and whether frame, glass and hardware are required.
