Existing Mosque Cladding Renovation & Retrofit Guide

Survey old walls and columns, resolve hidden defects and introduce new cladding without forcing an existing mosque to match ideal catalogue dimensions.

Survey before covering anything

Renovation projects contain conditions that drawings often miss: uneven plaster, old repairs, concealed cables, moisture marks and structural elements that are not square. New cladding can create a clean finished plane, but it should not be used to hide active defects.

Begin with measured photographs and a condition survey. Mark cracks, damp areas, loose finishes, service routes and historic fabric that must remain visible. Where necessary, small local opening-up can confirm the substrate before the fixing strategy is finalized.

Separate correction from concealment

A subframe can compensate for an uneven surface, but large deviations may need local repair first. The goal is to create a stable support plane rather than building an excessively deep cavity to avoid dealing with the existing wall.

Moisture must be solved at its source. Trapping damp masonry behind impermeable panels can accelerate deterioration and make future inspection difficult.

Respect existing proportions and heritage value

Older mosques may have doors, windows, calligraphy, plaster details or stone elements that establish the character of the interior. New panels should respond to those proportions rather than imposing a new module blindly.

Where heritage significance exists, the conservation team should decide what can be covered, repaired, reproduced or left untouched. Reversible fixing methods can be useful when future removal may be required.

Plan phased work around mosque use

Many renovation projects must keep parts of the mosque operational. Modular dry-install systems can reduce dust and allow work to move through defined zones. Packing and site storage should follow the installation sequence so finished panels are not handled repeatedly.

Before handover, photograph concealed service routes and the condition of the substrate. This record becomes valuable when panels are opened for future maintenance.

Project checklist

  • Survey defects and substrate condition
  • Repair active moisture before cladding
  • Use adjustable but controlled subframes
  • Protect heritage elements
  • Plan phased installation zones
  • Record concealed conditions before closing
