GRC, GFRC & GRG Mosque Cladding Guide
Use moulded mineral-based systems for arches, capitals, relief panels and decorative mosque interiors with clearly defined panel boundaries, support and finishing details.
Understand what each system is solving
GRC and GFRC are cementitious composite systems reinforced with glass fibres, while GRG is a gypsum-based reinforced material generally used for interior architectural features. All three can reproduce repeated curves, reliefs and moulded details more efficiently than carving the same geometry from heavy solid material.
In mosque interiors they are commonly considered for arches, cornices, muqarnas-inspired features, column capitals and decorative wall fields. The project specification should determine which material family is suitable for the environment and local requirements.
Design panel boundaries before mould production
Moulded elements are manufactured in pieces, even when the finished composition is intended to read as continuous. Panel sizes must account for lifting, transport, access through the building and the ability of installers to align pieces safely.
Joint locations should follow natural borders, shadow lines or motif boundaries. Trying to hide an unavoidable production joint through the middle of a clean flat surface usually creates more finishing work and a less predictable result.
Coordinate support and tolerances
Decorative moulded panels need a substrate or subframe capable of supporting their weight and maintaining alignment. The responsible project engineer should verify the support strategy. Shop drawings should show attachment points, panel thickness, cavity depth and interfaces with adjacent finishes.
Existing walls in renovation projects may be uneven, so the support system must provide enough adjustment to create a straight finished surface without forcing each panel to follow the old substrate.
Approve the finish on a representative mock-up
Paint, stone-effect coatings, metallic accents and other finishes can change how moulded relief reads under lighting. A small flat color chip is not enough for deep profiles. A representative corner, relief or capital sample should be finished using the actual coating system.
The mock-up is also the best place to judge joint treatment and lighting shadows before a large batch is produced.
Project checklist
- Choose GRC/GFRC/GRG by environment and specification
- Set panel boundaries before mould manufacture
- Confirm lifting and access sizes
- Coordinate support with the project engineer
- Use adjustable detailing for renovation substrates
- Approve finish and joint treatment on a shaped mock-up
